Current Road Updates
I-70 Lane Closures
During the week of April 13, major work activities on the Eastbound I-70 Express Lanes (Peak Period Shoulder Lane) Project and the traffic impacts associated with this work include:
- Various daytime lane closures in both directions of I-70 from just west of Empire (mile marker 230) to the East Idaho Springs interchange (mile marker 241) each weekday so crews can work on retaining walls and install guardrail. Please note that because it takes considerable time to put lane closures in place and pick them up when work is done, there could be signs, cones and other traffic control devices on the roadway before and after crews do their work.
Work scheduled to take place in the next few weeks includes:
- The phased closures and reconstruction of each of the on-ramps and off-ramps in the SH103 (Exit 240) interchange is scheduled to begin in mid-April. Access across the bridge will be maintained while each ramp is rebuilt. These ramps are being rebuilt in phases to keep traffic moving through a portion of the interchange. Crews will first rebuild the eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp followed by the eastbound on-ramp and westbound off-ramp.
- Bridge deck waterproofing and paving work on the SH103 Bridge. This work will require closing half the bridge at a time with flaggers directing traffic in alternating directions over the other half of the bridge.
- Excavation and utility work near the East Idaho Springs (Exit 241) Bridge in preparation for building the new bridge right next to the existing bridge structure. The current bridge will remain open to traffic until the new bridge opens in the fall, and temporary detour ramps will be built to provide access to and from I-70.
Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnel Closures
As part of the $20 million Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels Fixed Fire Suppression System (FFSS) project, 20 nights of overnight closures at the tunnels are scheduled to begin Monday, April 6, so the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) can install a linear heat detection system in each tunnel bore.
This work will occur Sunday through Thursday nights, requiring 20 nights of work. Lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. each night, with a full closure of one tunnel bore at 10 p.m. All lanes through both tunnels will reopen by 6:30 a.m. the next day. To minimize the impact on travelers, one of the tunnel bores will remain open at all times and pilot cars will lead I-70 traffic in alternating directions through the open tunnel.
