Sigurd Rockne has been in Breckenridge since the beginning of time.
Or at least that’s how the story goes. On Sept. 7, another Breck ski legend, CJ Mueller, welcomes Rockne into the Colorado Snow Sports Hall of Fame. That’s how Mueller’s speech concludes, with a reminder of Sigurd’s lasting impact on the ski town he brought to life.
Rockne and fellow Norwegian Trygve Berge co-founded Breckenridge Ski Resort in 1961, when it was little more than a T-bar and double chair on Peak 8.
91-year-old Rockne joins the HoF a decade after Mueller was inducted. But when Krystal 93 asked Mueller to describe Rockne, the decorated speed skier was typically humble – and generous with praise.
“Sigurd and Trygve were just the ski gods of Breckenridge. Sigurd was here from the beginning. I moved here 10 years later, 9 years later. I still have a picture at my front door from the 80s with Sigurd and Trygve in the starting gate of the dual employe race. It was over on what was called Endsville at the time. They’re smiling and ready to run down for the Wednesday employee race in Breckenridge.
It’s a humbling thing. The stuff I did myself didn’t seem like a big deal. I was just doing it. But then I look at Phil Maer and all these other racers, and of course these pioneers of the sport like Sigurd, and
