This week on the “State of Summit”, we’re learning that Affordable Music in Dillon is calling it quits. Owner Gary Koenig says, “I’ve been an old fogey since I opened the store. And I always made sure I had some young people who were aware of the new music and they helped me get the product.”
After thirty years and countless memories, the oldest record store in Summit County is closing for good even though Gary tried to keep it going. He says, “I’ve been trying to find someone to take over the store for several years.”
Affordable Music has moved all around the county in its 33 years. Its closing location in Dillon is now up for sale. Detroit developer Jake Porret wants to build there.
Gary says he will miss the record store, the music, and especially the music fans who kept it thriving all these years. “There’s still a lot of people who do have that love of music and like to go to record stores,” says Gary, but he also knows he’s ready to retire.
“I’ve never been a person with plans, honestly. I’ve been winging it for 70 years and I’ll be winging my retirement.”
Most everything at Affordable Music is on sale until closing on December 31.
