A lost dog? A lone wolf? Nope, it’s something else on frozen Lake Dillon

Another morning of subzero cold today and Lake Dillon has finally frozen over.

It happened a week or two later than usual and nearly a month later than last year, when the reservoir froze Dec. 20.

On Monday Jan. 13 a concerned citizen reported a lost dog – or maybe something else – trotting across the lake.

A Summit County Sheriff’s deputy flew a drone overhead to investigate and spotted a lone coyote. The commentary on Facebook is pure gold, like this:

“Why did the coyote cross the lake?” “To prove it wasn’t a chicken!”

If YOU get out on Lake Dillon, or any body of frozen water, treat the ice like backcountry snow:

  • Check conditions
  • Bring a partner
  • Use proper equipment
  • Leave immediately if you see or hear shooting cracks
