CBI investigates itself after one employee compromised hundreds of cases

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is investigating itself.

CBI confirms it has hired a Wisconsin firm to review its procedures and policies. The state hopes this review will improve transparency and accuracy in the wake of a scandal that sabotaged over 1,000 cases.

“This action follows the decisions of a single employee who allegedly manipulated data, compromising the integrity of CBI’s processes,” the CBI says in a statement.

CBI director Chris Schaefer continues, “CBI promised to hold itself accountable in a transparent manner to maintain public trust and this contract proves action will always follow our words.”

The CBI is currently investigating one of its own, DNA scientist Yvonne “Missy” Woods, who apparently deleted and manipulated data for years.

Woods retired in November 2023 before the CBI’s internal affairs investigation was completed. A criminal investigation is ongoing, according to the Denver Post
