Snowpack is slipping fast in the Colorado High Country – except for Summit County.
Copper Mountain and nearby Fremont Pass, Hoosier Pass south of Breckenridge, and even Grizzly Peak near Loveland Ski Area are measuring above average today, according to SNOTEL weather sites.
These are some of the only sites with above-average snowpack this first week of February.
For the first time since mid-December the Upper Colorado River headwaters, from Summit into Eagle and Grand counties, slipped below average, but just barely – 99%.
The further south you go, the leaner the snow:
- Roaring Fork River Basin (Aspen and Snowmass)… 85%
- Gunnison River Basin (Crested Butte)… 83%
- Dolores/San Miguel River (Telluride and Silverton)… 72%
- San Juan River (Wolf Creek)… 58%
What is working in Summit? We are still riding high from two big holiday storms, over Thanksgiving and Christmas, and below-average temperatures through January.
We could use a refresh, but the forecast doesn’t look promising. National Weather Service predicts little to no snow in the next few days. At least temperatures will fall back into the 30s.
