Today we are In the Classroom with Leah Wachowski, STEM teacher at the peak school.
“I really gravitated toward this experiential approach to learning and the ability to work more outside,” she tells Krystal 93 news director Phil Lindeman.
Now in her fifth year at The Peak School, Ms. Wachowski loves teaching big topics from the ground level, like a recent water health project with ninth graders.
“We participate in community-based learning through River Watch, where our students go and test Tenmile Creek once a month to look at the water quality,” she says of a recent project, where students analyzed the water itself and learned how tens of thousands of mountain travelers impact the creek without even knowing it.
“One thing they’re looking at with our river is how I-70 and all the salts on it is going into our river,” she says. “This is part of the great Colorado River Basin. We can potentially make this better so we don’t have all these fluctuations in our water.
Her students also learned how they can help.
“So they’re actually using this information from our school to write legislation to make sure that our water safety in Colorado is protected,” Ms. Wachowski says.
