It’s about to get easier for locals to petition the town of Dillon

The recent resident petition against lakeview condos in downtown Dillon has exposed unfair town laws.

As it is today, a successful petition needs signatures from 15% of registered voters. That is written into town code.

But the Colorado Constitution requires just 10% for a referendum petition.

Dillon is revising its charter to align with the state, making it easier for residents to petition the town and put items on the ballot.

A grassroots campaign this spring successfully gathered enough signatures to challenge a controversial downtown project. Town council gave Detroit developer Jake Porritt the green light for hundreds of lakeview condos on the Ptarmigan Lodge site, including the current home of Arapahoe Café.

The project now goes to public vote at a special election in October.
