An average of 2.5 cars every day are getting into accidents on the I-70 mountain corridor.
In just under seven months this year, Colorado State Patrol confirms 537 accidents between the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels and Glenwood Springs.
Most are small fender benders with no major impacts.
But CSP is concerned enough to send more troopers to I-70 for 24 hours of surge enforcement today, July 31.
Troopers are watching for aggressive drivers. CSP says aggressive driving is on the rise. Last year it led to more accidents than impaired or distracted driving.
When state patrol says “aggressive,” it means tailgating, swerving, reckless driving and, most often, speeding. Speeding is the leading cause of fatal accidents on I-70 and interstates across the West.
