Pickup truck careens 400 feet off I-70

A pickup truck slid off I-70 in a snowstorm Tuesday evening and barreled an estimated 400 feet down a steep embankment, barely missing large trees and boulders.

Summit Fire and EMS confirms a witness reported the incident around 5 p.m. on March 18. When firefighters arrived all three passengers were walking and talking with minor injuries. They were able to climb back up the embankment to the interstate.

Around 6:30 p.m. Summit Fire responded to a six-car pileup on Highway 91 (Fremont Pass) south of Copper Mountain. One person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Fremont Pass was closed for more than two hours.

Colorado State Patrol is investigating both incidents.

Across the High Country gusty winds and slick, icy roads led to many other minor spinoffs, closing five separate roads between Summit County, Vail and Leadville. At least one vehicle skidded off eastbound I-70 between Frisco and Silverthorne. Multiple others ran into guardrails on Highway 9 (Hoosier Pass) between Breckenridge and Alma.
