Serious accidents & wildfires: I-70 & US 285 updates

Hundreds of vehicles headed to Denver from the mountains were stuck in traffic for nearly 4 hours after two vehicles crashed in the eastbound lanes just on the east side of the Eisenhower Tunnel. Eyewitnesses tell us that both cars went through the guardrail and over the edge, landing on their rooftops.

The first call about the accident came in at 6:18am according to the Colorado State Patrol. The interstate was closed in both directions as workers rescued two people from the vehicles. Flight For Life was on scene for a time. It took workers several hours to remove the cars from the crash scene. No word yet on the conditions of those involved in the accident. The interstate reopened at 9:55am.

At around 2:00pm US Highway 285 was closed down at Indian Hills in both directions due to a grass fire named the Twin Forks Fire. The Colorado Department of Transportation shut the highway down between North Turkey Creek Road and Summer Road to let fire crews tackle the blaze. It grew to 6 acres. The road was reopened around 4:00pm. The photo below is courtesy of KMGH.

For a time, there were door to door evacuations along South Turkey Creek to Highway 285. Krystal 93 will continue to monitor the fire.

Further away from Summit County, there was a deadly multi-vehicle accident on I-25 northbound near Larkspur. The photo above is courtesy of CDOT. Seven people were taken to the hospital and one person died. I-25 NB was closed for around 4 hours and reopened around 4:15pm.
