What to expect for I-70 and DIA on Thanksgiving 2024

Thanksgiving travelers are hitting the road and air today.

On the I-70 mountain corridor Thanksgiving is usually the slowest winter holiday.

In 2023 the weekend before Thanksgiving saw just under 104,000 cars in three days. Thanksgiving weekend, including Turkey Day Thursday, saw nearly 134,000 cars in four days. Those are no busier than a slow to average summer weekend.

So far this season I-70 has been trending even slower.

Big DIA holiday

The scene could be different at DIA, where a TSA forecast expects 7.5% more travelers than last year.

TSA estimates just under 850,000 people will board an airplane between today and next weekend. That is 140,000 more than the entire population of Denver.

Today is projected to be the busiest 24 hours at DIA until next weekend.
