Coroner: Fairplay man found dead in Lake Dillon was transient, likely camping nearby

UPDATE Aug. 7

Summit County coroner has identified the man found dead in Lake Dillon the morning of Aug. 6 as 35-year-old Jonathan Thomas Wilson.

Authorities believe Wilson was transient and likely camping in the area. His last known address was in Fairplay. Authorities found a Colorado ID when they pulled him from the water.

Still unknown is how he ended up in the water. Kayakers found him around 8:30 a.m. He was fully clothed and apparently not recreating at the time of his death.

Cause of death is pending autopsy and toxicology screening. They will take four to six weeks.

Summit County Sheriff’s Office reveals new details about the body found in Lake Dillon this morning.

Kayakers discovered the body of a man around 8:30 a.m. near Giberson Bay. The body was fully clothed and not wearing a PFD.

Authorities do not suspect foul play.

Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons says it is unusual to find a body full clothed in the water, leading him to suspect drowning. The body was likely in the water for several hours, possibly overnight.

Identification is pending through the coroner’s office. Detectives are interviewing witnesses from Giberson Bay and nearby campsites. There are no leads

Authorities this morning are investigating a body found in Lake Dillon.

Summit County Sheriff’s Office confirms the body was discovered near Giberson Bay. That is on the northwest side of the lake off Dam Road.

Details are emerging. No word yet on when the body was discovered or the person’s identity.

Giberson Bay is a popular stop for paddlesports. It is close to a campground, Heaton Bay, with several lakeshore campsites.

In September 2022, two men drowned near Heaton Bay. The two brothers, Rigoberto Martinez, 28, and Alejandro Martinez, 23, of Oxaca, Mexico, were allegedly drunk and went swimming after dark. Summit County coroner ruled the deaths accidental.
