2 massive I-70 projects crank back into high gear next week

CDOT warns truckers and travelers to get ready now for two weeks of traffic holds and detours on the I-70 mountain corridor, from Floyd Hill to Vail.

Starting Monday, June 16, rock scaling returns to Floyd Hill just east of Idaho Springs. This comes with hourly traffic holds up to 30 minutes on both sides of I-70 at the base of the hill. It could take even longer for traffic to get back up to speed. These holds are happening Mondays through Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

On June 16 and the following Monday, June 23, westbound I-70 will close completely overnight for overhead sign installation. Both nights your detour will be County Road 65 at Exit 248 to U.S. Highway 6 at Exit 244. The interstate will close at 10 p.m. nightly and reopen around 4:30 a.m. the following morning.

Further west at Vail Pass is even more rock scaling with 20-minute holds, Mondays through Thursdays. Later this summer the interstate will shut down when helicopters fly in avalanche fencing.

Keep it tuned to Krystal 93 for real-time summer traffic new, or text “vailpass” and “floydhill” to 21000 for CDOT text alerts.

Together, these projects are worth over $1 billion: $700 million at Floyd Hill through 2029 and $325 million at Vail Pass through 2026.

The updated rest area at Vail Pass is more than a year overdue and remains closed.
