I-70 Watch: Spring break traffic holds steady during Summit’s record heat wave

Record heat and shrinking snow barely put a dent on I-70 this weekend. It was the second busiest weekend of ski season at the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels with 135,596 cars in three days, March 20-23. That was 2% busier than the previous weekend and 5% slower than the same time last year, shy of the busiest weekend this season by roughly 1,000 vehicles. Record heat persists For […]
Summit’s record heat streak breaks 70 twice, Ski Cooper closes for season

The hottest March in Summit County’s modern history continued this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and March 22, Summit officially broke 70 degrees Fahrenheit at the record-keeping station in Dillon. The high of 70 degrees on March 21 clobbered the old record of 61 degrees from 2004. The high of 71 degrees on March 22 […]
Another record falls during Summit’s warmest March in 115+ years

The dreaded March “heat dome” claimed another record today, although it wasn’t as hot as it could’ve been. The record-keeping weather station in Dillon read 67 degrees Fahrenheit around mid-afternoon, demolishing the old record of 59 degrees from 2017. At one point the National Weather Service said we could have reached the low 70s today. […]
Summit smashes first of potentially 3 high-temp records this week

Summit County today obliterated the first of maybe three high temperature records this week as the dreaded “heat dome” blankets the West. These are the only two years Summit […]

10 hours of lapping Pali Chair raises money for local avy victim’s wife

This year’s A-Basin Enduro on Wednesday, April 8, is raising money in memory of Dave Pickett-Heaps, the longtime Summit local killed earlier this month in an avalanche at Boss Basin. Says the team at A-Basin, Dave’s wife, Kaileen, is a “beloved part of the A-Basin community.” She is exactly the kind of person this 10-hour Pali Chair ski-a-thon was made to support. The Enduro, now in its […]

A pre-Paddy’s Day pub fight in Breckenridge sent one man to the hospital and left several more with minor injuries. Breckenridge PD is now searching for two of about 16 men involved in the brawl, which happened outside of Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub just before midnight on March 15. The two men wanted for questioning […]
Movies On Air: ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ is wailing, writhing, forgotten U.S. history

“The Testament of Ann Lee” shows March 18-19 at The Eclipse in Breck. Pilgrims are ingrained in our history. As a kid growing up in Denver, I fondly remember construction paper hats and turkeys. Names like Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower were as common as George Washington and Abe Lincoln. So was the sanitized story […]
Reviled reservations are working at busy Quandary Peak and Rocky Mountain NP

What do one of the busiest 14ers in Colorado and busiest national parks in the U.S. have in common? They are both quieter these days. And to thank? Controversial limits on who can visit and when. For the first time since 2013, Rocky Mountain National Park last year was not one of the five most-popular national parks in the U.S. with 4,171,431 visitors, […]
