A middle school counselor, experienced real estate agent and returning candidate are running for the Summit School District board of education in November.
Five candidates are vying for three empty seats, including school counselor Kim Dyer of Frisco, real estate agent Tom Day of Breckenridge and Jenniffer Gonzalez of Dillon, a county youth and family services employee who ran for the board and lost in the 2023.
Joining them are Dillon residents Whitney Horner, a county public health nurse, and Jacqueline Zheleznyak, a government relations expert with AdventHealth.
Leaving the board after two terms is vice president Lisa Webster. Leaving after one term are board treasurer Chris Guarino and secretary Johanna Kugler.
The local teachers’ union, Summit County Education Association, is endorsing two of the five candidates, counselor Dyer and nurse Horner. The union endorsement went public at the Ski Area COO Summit in Keystone Oct. 3.
“Dyer and Horner demonstrate a desire to thoughtfully improve educational systems for all Summit students,” union elections chair Sam Mise said in a statement. “They comprehend the financial obstacles facing public education in Colorado and are motivated to recruit and retain highly qualified educators despite a national teacher shortage.”
Election day is Nov. 4.
