Five people were hospitalized, including one with life-threatening injuries, when two semi-trucks and several passenger vehicles collided on I-70 above Silverthorne this afternoon.
Authorities confirm this rollover wreck happened just after 3 p.m. at mile marker 208, three miles east of Silverthorne, where a semi-truck heading westbound hit another semi-truck, pushing both vehicles and their trailers off the road. They smashed through a guardrail into oncoming traffic and hit “additional vehicles,” according to Colorado State Patrol.
Summit Fire and EMS rushed five people to the hospital. Summit Daily reports one was airlifted to the Front Range. The extent of other injuries is unknown.
Colorado Department of Transportation reports I-70 will not open tonight between Exit 205 at Silverthorne and the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels. Crews are repairing 1,500 feet of guardrail and clearing debris from the road. One of the semis was hauling a load of glass bottles.
The overnight detour is U.S. Highway 6 at Loveland Pass.
