CDOT enforces rare 18-hour trailer closure on I-70 mountain corridor, other routes

The November snowstorm continues, and CDOT is trying to keep it from becoming a snowpocalypse.

Starting today CDOT is enforcing a rare trailer closure on the I-70 mountain corridor and several other highways. No commercial or private trailers are allowed on nearly 60 miles of I-70 between Silverthorne and Golden.

The closure starts at 4 p.m. on Nov. 8 and continues until at least 8 a.m. on Nov. 9.

“This restriction is designed to reduce the chances of semi-truck and other impactful spinouts that require extensive manpower and specialized equipment to clear, and often cause prolonged closures of the interstate,” CDOT says in a news release.

Other trailer closures include:

  • US 285 in both directions from Mile Point 250 (Morrison) to 184 (Fairplay)
  • US 40 in both directions from Mile Point 234 (Winter Park) to 256 (Empire)
  • US 6 in both directions from Mile Point 217 (Keystone) to 229 (Georgetown)
  • I-25 in both directions from Mile Point 180 (South of Plum Creek Pkwy) to 150 (N. Academy Blvd)

During the trailer closure I-70 and other highways will be open to private and commercial vehicles without trailers, but with a catch: Any of these roads could close at any time for accidents or safety as more heavy snow arrives.

The National Weather Service is forecasting up to 18 inches along the I-70 mountain corridor with the heaviest snowfall between the Continental Divide and Front Range.
