Zamboni rescued from icy plunge at Keystone’s biggest skating pond

A Zamboni nearly went for an icy swim at Keystone’s Lakeside Village last night.

Eyewitnesses tell Krystal 93 the machine cracked through the ice around 7:50 p.m. Within minutes a crew with Dillon Towing and Recovery was on scene to keep it from sinking into the water.

“I live around the lake,” Keystone local Elle B. Wilson recalls. “I noticed a big, huge truck going down a sidewalk behind the lake. I thought maybe they were putting up Christmas lights because they had a crane.”

That’s when she noticed the Zamboni sinking into the pond. She says it was about a quarter submerged when the Dillon Recovery crew halted its descent.

“It was amazing how they did it,” Wilson says. “They had a little rowboat, like a canoe. It was fascinating the watch. They did a really good job.”

Wilson says the Zamboni was fully recovered just before midnight. She does not believe anyone was injured.

Krystal 93 has requested a statement from Keystone Resort.

Last year a skid steer sunk to the bottom of Lake Dillon during preparation for the annual PBR Pond Hockey Tournament. The tourney moved permanently to Georgetown Lake.

Thanks to Wilson for the photos!
