2 people, 2 dogs injured in early-morning crash at Vail Pass

Two people and two dogs were hospitalized when a truck crashed on westbound I-70 at Vail Pass just after 6 a.m. today.

Colorado State Patrol confirms the truck from Utah was the only vehicle involved.

The unidentified driver was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital, along with one passenger. Troopers could not confirm the passenger’s condition.

Two dogs escaped the wreck and bolted across the interstate, where at least one was struck by a vehicle. Both animals were taken to an emergency veterinarian. Their conditions are also unknown.

Wrangling the dogs is one reason this wreck closed the interstate for two hours. Both westbound lanes reopened around 8 a.m.

Official cause of the crash is under investigation. It was a warm, dry morning, but with ice reported in the pre-dawn shadows.
