April showers bring big pow days!
National Weather Service predicts up to 13 inches for Summit County by Saturday. A winter weather advisory is good for 36 hours, starting 6 p.m. today through 6 a.m. Saturday.
It comes with wind, blowing snow and maybe a foot of powder (6 inches on the low end) for Breckenridge, Copper, Loveland and Arapahoe Basin. Terrain at Copper, Loveland and A-Basin is close to 100% open for the incoming storm. At Breck you’ll have Peak 8, Peak 7 and Peak 6, although avalanche mitigation could shut down the high alpine for several hours. Closing day at all three is May 11.
Snowfall could be even deeper in the Vail area (up to 16 inches), where the winter weather advisory ends late Friday. Vail Mountain closes Easter Sunday.
Forecasters predict wet, slick roads for this storm. Pavement will freeze overnight up high at Vail Pass and the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels.
Luckily for pow hounds, I-70 weekend traffic has been shrinking for three weeks. This past weekend was the slowest since before Thanksgiving.
