Earth Day activities in Summit include celestial event

Celebrate the 55th Anniversary of Earth Day with the Headwaters Group of the Sierra Club. They are hosting a gathering of local groups showcasing successful ways to combat Climate Change and promote Biodiversity.

The Celebration is Tuesday, April 22 at the Breckenridge campus of Colorado Mountain College, from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. The event is free and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Throughout the Lobby, the Earth Day Fair will feature animated Information Tables, refreshments, and Capstone Research Project Exhibits addressing critical environmental, social, and economic challenges, by CMC students graduating from the sustainability studies bachelor’s degree program.

Later in the evening, get outside and look to the skies for the Lyrid meteor shower. It happens between April 16 and April 25 every year, and this year the peak lands on Earth Day (April 22). If the skies are clear, you should be able to see up to 18 meteors an hour.

The best time to observe the Lyrids is in the predawn hours when the shower’s radiant is at its highest in the sky.The shower is known for its luminous dust trains which can be observed for several seconds according to NASA. The Lyrids are associated with Comet Thatcher, a long-period comet that orbits the sun every 415.5 years, it last reached its closest approach to the sun in 1861.
