Man gives fake name to cops, hides out on porches before turning himself in

A Keystone man with a fake name sped from cops, stole a bike and eventually turned himself in last week on a 12-hours spree that ended in nine criminal charges.

It started just before midnight on May 8 with a traffic stop between Breckenridge and Swan Mountain Road. That’s where the suspect gave police a fake name and address. He got off with a ticket.

Twenty minutes later he was spotted on the Keystone side of Swan doing nearly 30 miles per hour over the speed limit. That’s where he fled from a patrol vehicle and swerved onto Tennis Club Road in Keystone, ditching the car and hiding out on patios in the Wintergreen neighborhood for over an hour.

Inside the abandoned car authorities found empty beer cans, but no sign of the suspect – until the next morning. That’s when a Wintergreen resident reported his bike was missing. Deputies went door to door and tracked down people who knew the suspect, learning he had used a fake name the night before.

As all this was happening in Keystone, the suspect turned himself into deputies at the sheriff’s office in Breckenridge. He admitted to lying and driving drunk, and said he wanted to turn himself in because it was the right thing to do.

He left with charges for eluding, speeding, reckless driving, theft and more.
