Three people were rushed to the hospital when seven vehicles collided on westbound I-70 at Vail Pass today.
Colorado State Patrol confirms the pileup happened just after 11:30 a.m. when a semi-truck, a box truck and five other vehicles collided just west of the Vail Pass summit.
Westbound I-70 was closed more than three hours. Thousands were sent on a detour into Leadville and over Battle Mountain Pass to Minturn.
The pileup occurred where CDOT is shifting lanes for its massive Vail Pass upgrade. Pavement there is bumpy, lanes are tight, and vehicles are bordered closely by concrete barriers.
The cause of the incident is under investigation. The condition of the three injured people was not available at press time.
Earlier today CDOT announced a new campaign to curb work-zone speeding with automated cameras. Last year alone 31 people were killed in cone zones statewide.
State patrol could not confirm if any of the injured people were road workers.
