Breck PD: Your electric dirt bikes are not street or recpath legal

Local teenagers are getting busted for ripping around Breckenridge on electric dirt bikes.

The machines, including brands like Surron, are considered off-highway vehicles. They are only permitted on U.S. Forest Service roads where OHVs are allowed, like the North Fork Swan system up Tiger Road, or portions of the Tenderfoot Mountain system.

Why are these rechargeable machines considered OHVs and not e-bikes? Because they have a throttle. That is the biggest difference between a Class 1 (no throttle) and a Class 2 (throttle included) e-bike.

Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on the Summit County recpath and some local Forest Service trails, like those at the Frisco Peninsula.

Riding a Surron or similar machine on roads, sidewalks and the recpath will earn you a $50 fine.
