The holiday is over, and the cone zones are back.
CDOT suspended road work for the July 4 holiday weekend. But summer is short and two new road projects are coming online today:
Swan Mountain rebuild
Swan Mountain Road is getting its first complete rebuild since the day it was paved in the ‘60s. This project is estimated at $22 million and could take three summers to finish.
It starts this week (July 7-11) with single-lane traffic on eastside Swan Mountain Road from Summit Cove to Lowry Campground. Traffic is down to one lane from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. You can access campgrounds on Swan from the Breckenridge side (Highway 9).
Starting next week, July 14-18, is a complete closure of east Swan. The road will remain closed all week with campground access again from the Breck side.
Crews are milling, paving and digging new culverts. Single and complete closures continue through September.
Glenwood Canyon bridge repair
In Glenwood Canyon CDOT is replacing 23 bridge joints on both sides of I-70.
Starting today are single-lane closures eastbound and westbound. This work continues for several weeks.
Floyd Hill and Vail Pass
Back in action this week are the two biggest road projects in Colorado history at Floyd Hill and Vail Pass. Together they are worth more than $1 billion.
At Floyd Hill you get staggered single and full closures for rock scaling on weekdays.
At Vail Pass you have 20-minute holds in both directions for scaling and helicopter work. CDOT is flying in avalanche fences to install about above westside Vail Pass, known as The Narrows.
