On Monday a family of five was killed in a fiery head-on collision just south of Kremmling on Highway 9. State patrol believes a pickup truck was driving in the wrong direction when it slammed into the family’s SUV, killing two adults, Manuel Cabral-Torres and Andrea Banuelos-Salazar, and three children as young as 2 years old. As of Thursday the driver of the pickup was in stable condition at a local hospital.

The Kremmling community is still reeling. A GoFundMe campaign for the Cabral-Torres family has raised $64,000 and counting. On Facebook, commuters share horror stories of close calls on that stretch of Highway 9, like this:

In a letter to Krystal 93, state patrol chief Col. Matthew Packard says he takes these head-on collisions personally and promises complete investigations into all fatal crashes.

“I’m also asking each Colorado driver and passenger to help end the suffering,” Packard continues. “If preventable crashes and the behaviors that cause them don’t become personal to the majority of drivers on our roads, we will all continue to lose. Colorado will never have enough troopers to catch every traffic violation. We need your help to set and maintain a social standard that prioritizes safety. We need your help.”
