Move over, Dew Tour. The Rockstar Energy Open is coming to town.
Seven years after Dew Tour left Breckenridge, more than 60 elite snowboarders are back at the birthplace of competitive snowboarding for three days of ripping and slashing at Peak 8. It is all going down Dec. 19-21, which just so happens to coincide with Ullr Fest, the biggest bash of winter in Breck.
On the start list are dozens of heavy hitters, like Summit’s own Olympic champ (and Rockstar athlete), Red Gerard.
“I’m beyond excited for the Rockstar Energy Open to come to Breckenridge,” Gerard said in a statement. “Growing up riding in Summit County and seeing how the snowboarding community has evolved makes this event even more special. It’s going to be awesome competing alongside veterans and rookies and bringing the energy of snowboarding to my home turf.”
The Rockstar Energy Open – can we just start calling it the Rockstar Open? – features a course designed by riders. Interestingly, there won’t be a formal slopestyle or superpipe contest. Instead, it’s a hybrid of both, plus big air for good measure.
Even more interestingly, this is a true open. Ten amateurs compete for an invite to the event through an online video contest. From Oct. 27 to Nov. 23, a panel of veteran freestyle snowboard judges scour hundreds of submissions, awarding weekly cash prizes for standout video parts, including Best Men’s Part, Best Women’s Part, Best Trick. There’s even a Viewer’s Choice Award voted on by fans. Read up on the rules and start submitting in October.
“Breckenridge has long been at the heart of snowboarding culture, and we’re proud to build on that legacy by hosting the Rockstar Energy Open,” said Jon Copeland, Chief Operating Officer at Breckenridge. “This event ties together world-class athletes with an incredible mountain experience, defining the future of high-energy mountain event experiences. We’re thrilled to welcome the competitive snowboarding community back to Breck this December.”
