This Saturday, Sept. 27, is National Public Lands Day, when thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to give a little love to national parks and forests nationwide.
But this day is bigger than just getting your boots dirty.
“It’s a chance to connect with new communities, an event that creates kinship among those working together for a common goal, and an opportunity to use America’s public lands for education, recreation, and overall physical and mental health,” the National Parks Service writes in a statement. “Let’s join forces for a common goal, stewarding America’s natural resources for future generations to enjoy. Be a part of this impactful day and help make a difference in our public lands

Here in Summit, Friends of the Dillon Ranger District is coordinating trail work in Breckenridge, and they are calling an audible. Volunteers will be working on Mountain Pride trail, between Boreas Pass and Baldy, hauling timber and clearing deadfall from the trail. It’s a half day of trail work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
FDRD’s original plan was to work on Bakers Tank Trail, another well-loved Breck classic.
If you’re not feeling a trail project, go exploring. Entry is free that day to all National Parks.
