Breck ladder crew fights pre-dawn fire at Fairplay café

Breckenridge firefighters rushed into Fairplay this morning, when a downtown restaurant caught fire and local volunteers were struggling into frozen gear.

The fire at Mr. Burros Café on Main Street started around 4 a.m., according to eyewitnesses. The ladder crew at Red, White and Blue Fire arrived as backup for the first firefighters on scene, the volunteers of Hartsel Fire Auxiliary.

“The temps this morning were negative 2,” Hartsel Fire writes on Facebook. “The firefighters bunker gear was covered in ice as they continued to work with frozen hands.”

No injuries were reported, although fire authorities have not confirmed if anyone was inside at the time. The cause remains under investigation.

Photos from RW&B Fire shows flames licking out from a second-story window. Photos shared by Hartsel Fire and eyewitnesses show the café with broken windows and charred walls.

Fairplay locals are already rallying to help the beloved café, which has a BLHA rating on Google. One promises to launch a GoFundMe campaign.

But the outpouring started while the fire was still burning, when neighboring restaurants donated coffee, coffee cups and burritos to first responders.

“Because of this community’s generous donations to keep the auxiliary running, we were able to feed Hartsel Fire, Northwest Fire, Red White and Blue Fire, Jefferson Como Fire, South Park Ambulance District, Park County Sheriff’s deputies and Fairplay police officers,” the post from Hartsel Fire continues. “This community continues to prove how caring we all are!”
