No fresh snow? No problem in Frisco, where the Meadow Creek Pond ice-skating rink is open for the holidays.
Find it behind Walmart just off Summit Boulevard. Even better, the Frisco rink is lit up until 10 p.m. nightly. Bring your own skates though. There are no onsite rentals.
Skating on natural ice is always at your own risk, but Frisco staff will be out there daily measuring the ice to make sure it is safe. They will rope it off if the ice gets too thin. And please, don’t go ice fishing there – fishing holes make for miserable skating.
Too warm for ice
Over in Silverthorne the North Pond Park ice-skating rink is not yet open for the season, although it could open at any time. Lake Dillon is far from freezing.
First, we’ll need cooler weather. The average temperature this past week was 35 degrees Fahrenheit at the Krystalized weather station in Dillon. Weekend temperatures barely fell below freezing, even after dark.
Today, Dec. 22, in Denver, 9News predicts a balmy 72 degrees – warm enough to break the record from 1955.
Summit County most likely will not break the record of 60 degrees set in 1940.
