Weekend ski traffic on the I-70 mountain corridor took a tumble, Feb. 6-8, but it was still one of the busiest weekends of winter.
This past Friday into Sunday 120,630 vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels, according to CDOT tunnel counts provided to Krystal 93.
That was down by nearly 11,000 cars from the previous weekend and slower than the two weekends around Christmas and New Year’s, making it the fourth-busiest weekend of ski season on the mountain corridor.
Traffic was slower than the same weekend last year by about 10,000 cars. Since November just one weekend has outpaced last year – MLK Weekend. Last year, the mountain corridor was deadlocked by snow and subzero cold. This year, it was a lot like the rest of winter with sun and dry roads.
Tides could be turning soon. Traffic tends to follow the snowstorms, and Summit is bracing for a long-awaited snow cycle. National Weather Service predicts snow beginning Tuesday, Feb. 10. It continues through the weekend with a good chance of daily snowfall. Thursday could be the snowiest day with the best powder riding on Friday morning.
