Summit girls sweep Day 1 of the state alpine ski champs in Vail

It was all Summit, all day today at opening day of the CHSAA State Alpine Ski Championships in Vail.

Two Summit High skiers, sophomore Malie Dieterich and senior Seth Montgomery, were crowned individual state champions for giant slalom. This is Malie’s first state title and Seth’s third. He has not lost a state GS race since his freshman year.

Led by Malie the girls swept the podium, plus one, with senior Mackenzie Cross in second, sophomore Lauren Leffel in third and Kaia Riter in fourth.

The boys nearly swept the podium with junior Aaron Greene in third. Summit’s stranglehold was broken by Aspen High School junior Joshua Stephen in second.

Summit is sitting pretty for a state alpine team title tomorrow when racing continues with slalom at Gold Peak. Summit is the winningest school in Colorado history for alpine ski racing with a combined 42 team titles, boys and girls. Their most recent was a team sweep in 2024.

Starting last year CHSAA separated the state titles for alpine and Nordic. It might not matter this season when the state Nordic races come to Snow Mountain Ranch this Friday and Saturday. The Summit boys team is undefeated. They are easy front runners for a team title. The girls are peaking at the exact right time, defeating the defending champs from Lake County at the final regular season race in Breck.
