I-70 traffic tells a mixed story this Memorial Day weekend

Weekend traffic was up but the holiday was down on the I-70 mountain corridor.

For the first time in eight weeks more than 100,000 vehicles traveled the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels in one weekend.

There were 109,646 cars in three days, May 22-24, and 146,599 cars in four days, May 22-25.

This continues a trend of shrinking traffic for the opening holiday of summer. Traffic this year was down more than 12% from the record high of 2021, when 166,791 vehicles hit the interstate in four days.

The previous year, during COVID shutdown, four-day holiday traffic hit an all-time low of 119,157 vehicles.
