One of the busiest weekends of the year on the I-70 mountain corridor was one of the slowest Father’s Day weekends in recent history.
Just over 135,000 vehicles traveled the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels in three days, June 19-21. That was 10% more than the previous weekend and good for third-busiest weekend of the year behind a pair of ski season weekends in late February and mid-March.
This weekend set a few new benchmarks for summertime travel, becoming the first stretch of three consecutive days with more than 40,000 vehicles each day. On Sunday more than 48,000 cars passed through Summit, making it the busiest 24 hours since early January.
But this year was still quieter than any Father’s Day weekend since 2020.
In 2023 this weekend made the top-10 busiest of all time with nearly 153,000 cars in three days. In 2019 it cracked the top-3 busiest of all time – a title it still holds.
