Saturday traffic swells on I-70 for the busiest weekend of summer, barely

Saturday was up while Friday and Sunday were down on the busiest weekend of summer.

The mountain corridor added about 500 vehicles, June 26-28, for 135,665 cars in three days. That was still slower than the same weekend in 2025 and 2024 by about 5,000 vehicles.

Saturday, June 27, saw nearly 42,000 vehicles driving in both directions, making it the busiest Saturday since the third weekend of March.

Friday and Sunday were slower than the previous weekend.

Looking back on June this was the slowest since the pandemic on I-70 with just over 515,000 cars in four full weekends.

Last year’s June total was 529,000 vehicles. The year before was 535,000 cars.

I-70 between Summit and the Front Range was mostly free of backups and closures. West of Summit in Glenwood Canyon nasty winds blew a tree onto eastbound I-70. Video from I-70 Things shows motorists clearing branches from the road before crews came to clear it.

Just about everywhere on I-70 was hazy from multiple new wildfires sparked by wind and dry lightning.

On Sunday afternoon Summit was coated in thick smoke from a new fire near Leadville, the Willow Fire, burning nearly 1,100 acres in a few windy hours on Sunday afternoon. Dozens evacuated from nearby homes and campgrounds. Nearby trails remain closed, including portions of the Colorado Trail.
