Airsoft gun leads to felony road rage arrest on I-70 through Summit

Road rage with a pellet gun this month led to a felony arrest in Summit County.

A woman told Summit County sheriff’s deputies she was driving downhill from the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels into Silverthorne on June 14 when a man started tailgating her.

Before she could change lanes, the suspect pulled up next to her in the right lane and brandished what appeared to be a firearm. He pointed it at her and then sped off.

The suspect was caught by deputies near Exit 205, where he reportedly lied about the gun, saying he did not have a firearm. He consented to a search of his vehicle and deputies found a black Airsoft pellet gun on the passenger seat.

“After a full investigation, the man was placed under arrest for felony menacing with a simulated weapon, driving under revocation and expired tags, and was booked at the Summit County Detention Facility,” the sheriff’s office reports

The suspect’s next court appearance is June 24 for a bond hearing.

Law enforcement statewide has responded to multiple serious road rage incidents this month.

In Boulder County two men, ages 26 and 35, allegedly fired at a truck on U.S. Highway 36. No one was injured. Both men were arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder.

In Wheat Ridge two motorists stopped in the middle of I-70 to confront each other. Footage shared by KKTV shows the two swerving, tailgating and brake-checking before stopping. Both were charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
