Bad habits or bad drivers? Troopers survey Colorado about speeding, seatbelts, more

When’s the last time you had dinner at the wheel?

If you’re like 73% of Colorado drivers you’ve chowed down in the past week.

Colorado State Patrol recently surveyed 945 drivers of all ages for its 2024 Drivers Behavior Report. And the findings just might hit a little too close to home, like:

  • 89% of drivers always wear a seatbelt UNLESS they are traveling less than 2 miles from home. That’s when it drops to 80%.
  • Women (92%) are more likely to wear a seatbelt than men (86%).
  • 57% of drivers will never drive when drunk or high.
  • 19% of drivers have gotten behind the wheel recently after 2+ drinks.
  • 16% of drivers speed most of the time or all the time. That is down 4% from last year.
  • More than half of drivers speed on highways.
  • 38% of motorcycle riders occasionally wear a helmet. 7% never wear one.
  • 85% of drivers always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • 45% of drivers stop for pedestrians crossing outside of a crosswalk.

CSP says Colorado roads are slightly safer this year – 299 fatalities statewide as of Nov. 1, down 8% from the same time last year.

But the most dangerous time for semi-trucks is fast approaching. Deadly big-rig accidents tend to peak in January and February.
