Breck co-founder Sigurd Rockne, 91, shines at HoF induction

In a class including Lindsey Vonn and the fastest American on skis, Breckenridge co-founder Sigurd Rockne stole the show.

Rockne (finally) joined the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame this weekend at the lush induction ceremony in Vail. He arrived with generations of family and other Summit celebs, like fellow co-founder Trygve Berge, also in his 90s.

Also joining the HoF Class of 2024 were Vonn, flying in from Los Angeles, and Ross Anderson, the American speed-ski record holder, in town from New Mexico.

Rockne kept his remarks short, sweet and funny, recalling how he once raced — and beat — World Cup legend Stein Eriksen on the downhill track in Rockne’s hometown of Voss, Norway.

The 91-year-old Norwegian has lived in Summit longer than his home country. He came to Colorado in 1960, one year before Breckenridge opened for skiing. He and Berge ran the Breck ski school for more than a decade.
