Summit School board candidate Whitney Horner will tell you she is running for every local kid. But her two children, 4 and 6 years old, are a big reason she is ready to make her first run at elected office.
“My personal ‘why’ is my children,” Horner tells Krystal 93. “I want my kids to see that I can do hard things and take a stand for what I believe in. I want them to see me come to the table, actively listen, be thoughtful and explore opinions that aren’t my own (…) so they ultimately believe they can do these things as well.”
Horner is a public health nurse with Summit County, where she is teaching local families to eat well and eat right. If elected, she brings one important lesson to the board – never assume you know everything.
“I love Summit County, I love our youth, I’m definitely learning and figuring out how I can make an impact,” Horner says. “I won’t get it all right every step of the way, but I want to show up and learn and keep trying to move forward.”
Krystal 93 news director Phil Lindeman talks with Horner about academics, testing and why education is bigger than both.
Five candidates are running for three seats on the Summit School District board of education. Election day is Nov. 4.
