Expect a month of overnight closures at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels

CDOT is milling, paving and patching inside the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels before ski season. And that means delays this fall.

Starting Sunday, Sept. 14, be ready for alternating overnight closures at the tunnels through late October. Both sides of I-70 will be held at the tunnels for up to 30 minutes at a time, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sundays and most weekdays.

CDOT promises no closures on Fridays and Saturdays.

“The project will remove the existing pavement on the right lanes of I-70 in both tunnels and replace it with new asphalt,” CDOT writes in a statement. “This will remove the rutting, extend the asphalt’s lifespan improving the pavement condition, and provide a safer driving experience before winter hits. Work will also include restriping the lanes.”
