Florida man arrested for kidnapping standoff in downtown Breck

A Florida man is in custody for a standoff in downtown Breckenridge yesterday, involving an alleged kidnapping and an armored vehicle.

Yesterday’s standoff began with reports of a missing and endangered boy in Sarasota. Police there said the suspect had recently lost custody of his son and believed the man was in Breckenridge with the boy.

Breckenridge PD tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a home on French Street and cordoned off the block, telling nearby residents to shelter in place. Police also requested an armored vehicle from Summit County Sheriff’s Office “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a Facebook post at the time. Police did not believe the man was armed.

Other people inside the home confirmed the suspect was there with the missing boy. What followed was hours of negotiation with the suspect, who peacefully surrendered through his lawyer. He was arrested on the outstanding warrant from Florida.

The child “is currently in a safe environment,” according to police.

Chatter on Facebook at the time questioned where this armored vehicle came from:
