UPDATE 5:24 p.m. — An Xfinity contractor struck a gas main around 3:45 p.m. today, forcing dozens to evacuate from neighborhoods in north Silverthorne.
The town confirms Xcel Energy crews are en route to stop the leak and fix the line. Homes on North Chipmunk Lane and Golden Eagle Road remain evacuated.
Nearby residents outside of the evacuation area should not use lights or other electrical devices.
Witnesses report smelling natural gas hundreds of yards from the ruptured line.

Silverthorne, Colo. — A gas leak in north Silverthorne is forcing dozens to evacuate from homes in Eagles Nest and nearby neighborhoods.
A Krystal 93 listener reports he was turned around by police and firefighters around 4 p.m. trying to enter Willowbrook from Highway 9.
“You can hear the gas line rupture,” the listener says. “It sounds like a jet engine.”
An alert from Summit County calls this a gas main break. No information on how the gas line was ruptured, telling residents to leave the area immediately.
The evacuation is good for 500 feet around North Golden Eagle and North Chipmunk Lane. Golden Eagle Road and Willowbrook Road are closed at Highway 9.
Evacuees can go to Silverthorne rec center.
