Honor a century of local veterans on Memorial Day in Dillon

On Memorial Day Monday the town of Dillon is hosting its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the town cemetery off U.S. Highway 6.

Buried in the cemetery are dozens of local veterans dating back to the late 1800s, including men and women who served in turn-of-the-century cavalry and World War I.

For decades now a WWII fighter pilot and local legend, Stuart “Boots” Gordon, has been in the front row at the ceremony. In March he turned 101 years old.

This year’s event opens and closes with music from the Summit County Brass Quintet and a presentation of the colors by local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Summit Rotary then reads the names of veterans interred at the cemetery.

The local Elks Lodge is there for a commemoration, plus other to-be-announced speakers from across the county.

The Dillon Memorial Day Ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

The Elks hosts a barbecue lunch at the Silverthorne lodge at noon.
