I-70 Watch: Corridor catches spring fever with busiest westbound days of ski season

It wasn’t the busiest weekend of ski season, but it was the busiest for people coming into the mountains.

In three days, March 13 to 15, nearly 71,500 vehicles traveled I-70 westbound through the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels. Westbound lanes haven’t been that slammed since mid-summer.

By The Numbers: I-70 westbound (average)

  • In 3 days… 71,450 vehicles, roughly the population of Grand Junction
  • Per hour… 992 vehicles, year-round population of Dillon
  • Per minute… 17 vehicles, about how many breaths you take per minute

A grand total of 132,974 vehicles took I-70 through Summit this weekend. That is down about 3% percent from the season high two weeks ago but still good for the second-busiest weekend of ski season. It was also 6.5% percent busier than the same time last year.

History shows March is the busiest month of ski season with spring breakers converging on the slopes.. Last year the third weekend was the busiest with 142,498 cars. In 2024 it was the second weekend with 141,289 cars.

So far this season I-70 has not cracked the 140k mark. The busiest weekend was the fourth weekend in February (Feb 27 to March 1) with 136,565 cars.
