Today we are IN THE CLASSROOM at Carriage House Early Learning Center in Breckenridge with three-and-under lead teacher, Miss Kielee.
“Here at Carriage House specifically we do a lot of play-based learning, where we learn by play,” she tells Krystal 93 news director Phil Lindeman during a recent visit to her classroom. “We do a lot of fun activities, we get the kids engaged, and then we throw in skills like shapes or fine motor skills and counting. We get those sneaky ideas along with the play.”
They blast off with rocket ships.
“Our activity today was squares and triangles,” she says, “so we broke up their names on squares, gave them some glue sticks and let them build their own rocket ships with their names.”
Then, they land on the obstacle course.
“They’re using balancing skills, they’re using patience skills with their friends,” she says. “They communicate and talk about where they’re going while they’re learning about shapes – the squares, triangles, circles, all that fun stuff.”
But it’s not all games and play.
“It is so much cooler to see kids gain a concept when they learn it themselves, when it’s not just coming from a worksheet or test score,” she says. “You’re getting to see them interact and grow and become their own individual being.”
The other coolest thing for Miss Kielee is the Carriage House community.
“We have an amazing group of parents here at Carriage House. They’re so involved,” she says. “I also get the fun opportunity to go to meetings and lessons that the county puts on, and just grow my development as a teacher and bring it into the classroom.”
