The driver of a Jeep Gladiator remains at large today more than two weeks after taking a wild and illegal detour to skip I-70 traffic.
Summit County Sheriff’s office reports the Jeep was stuck on westbound I-70 on Sept. 24, about 1.5 miles east of Vail Pass.
That’s where the driver peeled off the interstate, went down a steep hill, crossed West Tenmile Creek and got stuck in mud. The driver winched the Jeep free, uprooting a tree in the process, and then drove down the non-motorized recpath before climbing another hill to eastbound I-70.

The whole ordeal was caught on camera by multiple witnesses who were also stuck in traffic.
By the time a sheriff’s deputy picked through traffic the driver was gone. It is now up to the U.S. Forest Service to pursue the culprit.
