The I-70 mountain corridor was busy this summer, but not quite record setting.
Let’s start with Labor Day weekend. In four days, 187,419 cars passed through the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels. That’s more than the entire population of Fort Collins on the road, beating last year’s total by a slim margin – 1,300 cars – and making it the busiest four-day weekend since Labor Day 2022.
Looking back on summer 1.69 million vehicles traveled I-70 through Summit on weekends only, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Yet again, that’s just barely busier than last summer (1,651,906 cars) but noticeably slower than 2022 (1,784,763). Busiest summer in history was 2019 with nearly 1.9 million cars on weekends only.
Summer this year hit a high mark in mid-July with 153,343 cars in three days. That was the busiest weekend in five years on I-70 and one of the top-10 busiest of all time.
