Body of missing toddler found near Blue River in Silverthorne

UPDATE 6:20 p.m. — The body of a toddler who went missing in Silverthorne this afternoon was found near the park where he disappeared.

A town spokeswoman says authorities found the boy’s body while searching the nearby Blue River. Officials believe his death was accidental.

“The town of Silverthorne is processing a tragic and heartbreaking incident in our community,” reads a statement from the town. “Our hearts go out to the family who lost a loved one and to emergency responders who were involved in the incident.

Authorities declined to comment further, pending autopsy through Summit County Coroner.

UPDATE 4:35 p.m. — Authorities confirm the missing child is a one-and-a-half-year-old boy. He is wearing a green sweatshirt, blue jean shorts and white Velcro Nikes. He went missing in the past two hours.

Summit County Rescue Group and regional authorities are helping Silverthorne police scour the area.

A man who claims to be the boy’s uncle posted more information to the Facebook group Missing People From The State of Colorado, saying the boy and his mother were passing through town when he disappeared.

ORIGINAL — Cops in Silverthorne are searching for a missing child.

The child was last seen near Willow Grove Open Space at the end of Willow Way, about six blocks north of the rec center.

The open space connects to Blue River Trail and is within easy walking distance of several ponds. The trail crosses the river just north of the open space.

Authorities ask you to avoid the area while they search. They have not said if the missing child is a boy or a girl, or how long the child has been missing.
