Silverthorne man crushed by half-ton boulder near Buena Vista

A Silverthorne man on lunch break this Tuesday was crushed in a rockslide near Buena Vista.

Chaffee County sheriff reports the man, Paul Frasch, 59, stopped for lunch with another man near the Arkansas River on County Road 371. The two worked for a moving company and often visited a popular camping area there, known locally as the “Rapid 5 1/2 Pullover.”

While walking along a trail Frasch dislodged a rockslide and was caught under several rocks, including one boulder estimated at a half ton (roughly 1,000 pounds).

Frasch’s coworker called 911 for help. The victim was pronounced dead on scene when authorities arrived. The other man suffered minor injuries trying to help the victim.

Chaffee sheriff is investigating.
